This particular musri blade is very unique in style. Only very few are known to exist in museum and private collections. The shape of the blade is in the form of a bird. The blades are hung over the shoulder and were high ranking prestige items. In the literature they are known as throwing blades although most lickely were not used as a throwing blade. This example has dotted motifs and some incised decoration. A very high quality intriguing item.

Dimensions shield : Length: 140 cm x 48 cm
This type of shield is found in many african ethnic groups, whether Bantu or not. It is called nguba, guba, wara or gele according to these tribes. It is made up of several layers of braided fibers and an oval piece of wood serves as a handle. This basketry work was traditionally reserved for men, except in the Ngiri and Poto where women could exercise it. The name Nguba comes from the proto-bantu gùbà word which means «shield». The Obambas sometimes used animal skin to make them.

Museum quality hornbill type of Kota bird knife
This is an onzil/ osele, but mistakenly these knives are called Throwing Knives, although they were never meant to be used as a weapon. They are mostly ceremonial and also used in certain religious processions . The shape of the blade is in the style of the Hornbill head, a bird much admired in Africa, hence the usual title “bird head knife”. Most probably originated by the Kota people from Gabon and later adopted by the Fang and other neighboring tribes.

The Avongara were the nobility and passed it down through their lineage. chiefs had many roles within the chiefdoms such as being military, economic, and political leaders. All the unmarried men were laborers and warriors. This shield belonged to a Zande (Azande) warrior.
